Did you know today is National Doctors' Day? Each year Doctors' Day is celebrated on March 30th to honor physicians for their work and contributions to society.

This day was officially signed into U.S. law in the 1990s by President George H. W. Bush as a national holiday but the history dates back to 1842.

A man named Dr. Crawford Long first used ether to anesthetize a patient before surgery in 1842. Dr. Long’s wife, Eudora Brown Almond, then conceived of the day that would become “National Doctors' Day.” Mrs. Almond also chose a red carnation to represent the sacrifice, charity, bravery, courage, and love doctors possess to do their work.
